On July 10, the IfaS is organizing the conference “Conference for Nature-Based Carbon Removals in Hyperarid Regions: A Case Study on Mauritania” at the Environmental Campus Birkenfeld as part of the SAREP (Sahara Reniassance Project).
The SAREP project aims to develop and implement a “Green Business Case” as part of a European industrial initiative in cooperation with the Islamic Republic of Mauritania. The multi-sectoral approach includes the establishment of an agroforestry system in the Sahara, which is to produce a wide variety of products such as organic vegetable oil, CO2 certificates, staple foods and wood pellets using a seawater desalination plant supplied with renewable energy and a drip irrigation system.
In addition to creating regional added value, improving water and food security and providing local job prospects, profitable and attractive products are produced that make a positive contribution to the decarbonization of industrial production. The targeted scaling of the project to an area of around 2 million hectares has the potential to lead to a real turnaround in global efforts to achieve the United Nations’ sustainability goals. The project was presented last year at COP28 in Dubai, among other places. The Mauritanian government has now formed an inter-ministerial committee to support the project and a memorandum of understanding has been signed. At the end of January 2024, further negotiations were successfully held with various Mauritanian ministries on administrative details and the permits required for the project.
At the event, you can find out about the current status, the next steps and the implementation roadmap for the project. Take the opportunity to exchange ideas with the speakers and participants.
