The 15th International Circular Economy Conference (ICEC), held on November 6, 2024, at the Environmental Campus Birkenfeld, brought together global experts and stakeholders to discuss innovative solutions for sustainability. Organized under the guidance of IfaS CEO Professor Peter Heck and his team at IfaS, this annual event serves as a platform to highlight cutting-edge projects and initiatives advancing circular economy principles and addressing global environmental challenges.
This year’s conference attracted participants from around the world, including China, Nigeria, and several European countries, alongside representatives from leading institutions and organizations. ICEC provided insights into various ongoing and planned projects supported by IfaS, emphasizing their role in fostering socio-economic benefits and driving sustainability.
A key highlight of the conference was a presentation by Carlos Cabeleira, the main coordinator of the EU-funded LCA-Care project. Representing the Institute of Education and Sciences (ISEC), Carlos delivered his presentation virtually via Zoom, focusing on the project’s transformative impact on the agri-food sector.
The LCA-Care project is designed to empower small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the agri-food industry with the tool, knowledge, and skills to adopt life cycle assessment (LCA) and eco-innovative practices. Carlos explained how the project enables SMEs to identify and reduce their environmental impact, improve sustainability performance, and transition to greener operations.
By addressing the lack of specific EU Ecolabel criteria for the agri-food sector, LCA-Care provides SMEs with tailored resources to meet sustainability goals and prepare for future eco-labeling opportunities. Additionally, the project offers advanced training programs, equipping current and future SME managers with practical expertise in LCA, eco-innovation, and sustainability leadership.
ICEC provided LCA-Care with a platform to connect with a global audience, amplifying its mission to foster sustainability in the agri-food sector. By featuring LCA-Care, the conference underscored its commitment to advancing circular economy principles and supporting initiatives that drive environmental and socio-economic progress worldwide.
